This month’s volunteer spotlight, Leslie Storey, is like a ray of sunshine when she lends a hand at the Southeastern Railway Museum. She has been a volunteer for about four years. When asked why she became a volunteer, she points out that she has been volunteering with non-profits all her adult life. Volunteering is a fulfilling part of Leslie’s life. Some of the other organizations that she has volunteered with are: Music Time (2013-2015); Home Owner’s Association (Treasurer, 2013-2016); Family Promise of Gwinnett (2015-2016); and Women’s Circle at Unity Atlanta Church (Facilitator, 2014-2017).
Leslie first volunteered with her husband, Steve Storey, at the 5K run. They had to be at the 5K run at 6:00 am! What a fun way to start your first day of volunteering for SRM. We are so glad the early start didn’t deter her from continuing her role as a volunteer! Her husband, Steve Storey, is also a volunteer at the SRM. He is one of the lead volunteers for the SRM library. We appreciate both their time and talents at the SRM.
Since her early start with volunteering for the 5K Run, Leslie has assisted with many other activities. She has been a camp counselor in the summer day camp, and helped with large school tour groups and the 2nd Thursday preschool program. She helps out at the information table near the ticket booth on busy weekends. Leslie still helps out with the 5K run and most recently lent a hand at the Steak Cook-Off event. As one can see, Leslie is kept busy with all the activities that need spots for volunteers.
When asked if Leslie had a favorite job or activity she enjoys doing when volunteering, she shares, “I enjoy interacting with people, adults and children, answering their questions and seeing the kids’ enthusiasm!”
To learn more about Leslie, she answered some personal background questions for the interview.
Have you always lived in GA?
Leslie: Yes, I was born and raised in Atlanta. I have lived in Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Forsyth counties during my life time.
What profession or career have you been in?
Leslie: For the last 25 years I’ve been an accountant in the accounting and finance field. Prior to that, initially I was a social worker for ten years, then a sales rep in the printing industry.
Leslie has a variety of hobbies and interest. Among them are attending performing arts performances, specifically live theater – musicals performed by high school students and/or talented adults at small local venues. She enjoys choral concerts and opera. Her favorite type of exercise is Pilates. Traveling is another hobby Leslie enjoys. She says that she tries to make traveling an adventure. Leslie takes pleasure in reading to learn about new things or ideas.
Leslie, being the warm and friendly person she is, concludes the interview with this comment: “I like everyone I have met who is a SRM staff or volunteer.”
I want to thank Leslie for her interview and her service at the SRM.
