This is Part 2 of our ongoing participation in the Georgia Trust’s Places in Peril program seeking to identify and preserve historic sites, or in our case, equipment, threatened by time, Georgia’s weather, lack of maintenance and staff, and the vast amount of experiential learning projects on our campus. The program in no way reflects poorly on our status or our dedicated crew. It only highlights new opportunities for education, restoration, and historic preservation.
This feature is our flat car with an Industrial Brown Hoist Burro Crane, last used by the Chattahoochee Valley Railroad. Burro cranes were well suited to light-duty maintenance and construction jobs along a rail line. Instead of a pine tree, the little cranes could be fitted with a variety of attachments to fill a wide variety of needs. They were used for digging, lifting, and even snow removal on those rare occasions in Georgia. The Museum could save expenses and benefit from having a Burro in good working order while our volunteers learn career-enhancing skills in restoration and operation!
