The Southeastern Railway Museum opened Rising from the Rails: A Black History Month exhibition on February the 3rd with an opening reception. The event was hosted by The United Ebony Society and curated by Aleatha L. Williams. Artists from Chicago, Virginia, and the metro Atlanta area exhibited works that represent the African American experience. In addition, some of the works highlighted the achievements and contributions of African Americans in railroad history.
At the opening reception, the award for “Best in Show” was judged and presented by international acclaimed artist, Alexi Torres. Alexi Torres, a native of Cuba, chose Virginia based artist, Janelle Washington for her submission Equality, a painted paper cut (pictured below). All exhibiting artists, Saleam Bey, Patience Cooper, Jasmine Kinard, Jean Lewis, Aleatha Lindsay, Herman McClenton, Vernon Robinson, Janelle Washington, and Alaina Williams received a Certificate of Participation from the Southeastern Railway Museum and The United Ebony Society. The Museum Pick award is still up for grabs and you get to vote on your favorite artist till February the 28th!

The Rising from the Rails exhibition will be on display within the museum till Tuesday, February the 28th. It is free to view with museum admission. All works are on sale with a portion of the proceeds going to the Southeastern Railway Museum.
